about

Track #1 and #2: Hydrophone recordings of frog fishes known locally as Xarroco, made in Gilão/Séqua river on the south of Portugal.

The first track approaches the Xarroco/frog-fish as unique "soloist" on shallow waters while the second captures a choral atmosphere on a deeper water bank under strong current. Acoustic communication is an essential element for the Xarroco reproduction. On Track #2, i decided to preserve a few car sounds as a road winds through the river in order to give the idea of closeness between a natural habitat and the contiguous human pressure.

Track #3: is a personal mapping of Alportel creek, by successively positioning recording devices from one point to other until the path closes itself. This creek is one of Gilão river's sources located in the Serra do Caldeirão. From here it flows to south eventually meeting the recording positions of tracks #1 and #2.

The chosen recordings consider different tides and times of the day - afternoon, dusk, late night, but reversed, so the first track is recorded at night, second at dusk and the third, in the very early afternoon.

The Lusitanian toadfish (Halobatrachus didactylus) is known locally as
Xarroco. It inhabits on soft sand or mud buried and concealed in rock crevices and it is known to produce sounds, a wide variety of noises,
such as whistles, grunts, croaks, whistles that are used both to attract females and to deter intruding males. It is in early spring that the reproductive season begins. Males seek a nest from which they emit sounds, often forming a chorus with other nearby males.
